Carriers are selected based on the shipment destination: cross-border shipments are not undertaken by every carrier

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam: with more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings, more than 700 letters and Van Gogh’s collection of Japanese prints, they have the largest collection of work by Vincent van Gogh in the world. As well as the museum, there is also the official Van Gogh Museum web shop. Various items are for sale here, such as prints of course, but also special crockery and clothing. Sending these items can be a challenging issue: they are often expensive and fragile items to send. To make sure this is handled well, they work with Transsmart. This ensures much more user- friendliness: both for the customer as well as for the Van Gogh Museum.

The Van Gogh Museum has the largest collection of work by Vincent van Gogh. The museum’s aim is to make the life and work of Vincent van Gogh, one of the greatest painters of the 19th Century, accessible to as many people as possible, in order to inspire and enrich their lives. The museum holds the largest collection of his paintings in the world. The most famous, such as The Potato Eaters, Sunflowers and The Yellow House, are available to view here. Additionally, a large proportion of his letters are stored here and there are also arts works by other 20th Century artists, such as Claude Monet.

The logistics
As well as the museum element, the Van Gogh Museum also has a web shop department, where various items can be purchased. Peter Vogler, head of Logistics & Planning, is responsible for the operational elements. “We sell a lot of merchandise via our web shop and we also have four other shops that are restocked several times per week from our warehouse. Logistically speaking, it’s a lot to deal with!” explains Peter. “We work with multiple carriers, three different parties in fact, meaning it’s all the more important that the processes are streamlined.” All sorts of merchandise is sold via the web shop: from pencils to shirts, from porcelain vases to highly exclusive items. Peter: “We also deliver extremely fragile items, which require extra care when being shipped. This makes our shipments more complex.”

The Transsmart solution
Peter: “I already knew Transsmart from a previous job. When I started at the Van Gogh Museum about a year and a half ago, one of my jobs was to implement a new strategy for logistics (transport). I immediately thought of Transsmart: from my previous experience with this company, I was immediately really enthusiastic about a potential collaboration.” Within our existing ERP system, Exact Globe, we implemented a link with Transsmart. “By using this within our system, we are now able to arrange our logistic transportation processes much more easily. Everything is now arranged via one system, which is far more user-friendly. As well as this, the system automatically emails our customers to keep them up to date. This means that both we and our customers are always up to date with the status of a shipment, 24 hours per day. It’s ideal! The partnership with Transsmart means we can keep our service very accessible.”

Worldwide deliveries
The Van Gogh Museum web shop doesn’t just ship within the Netherlands, but these days also overseas – worldwide, even. “For each purchase, the correct carrier is automatically selected by the ERP system. The carriers are selected based on the shipment destination: cross-border shipments are not undertaken by every carrier. Moreover, various documents are required to export products cross-border. Transsmart ensures the automatic generation of the required documents and special labels. Previously, this was all done by hand: thanks to the Transsmart system we save a great deal of time! These days we can even deliver worldwide within 48 hours. This is a huge change compared to how we used to work. In short: we are really happy about the partnership with Transsmart: a very valuable investment.”
